Chamaerops humilis Doum is the leaf fiber of the Mediterranean dwarf palm, hand-harvested on Morocco's Atlantic plains and Atlas foothills. It has been the backbone of Moroccan basketry for centuries: a fiber that is light in the hand yet firm enough to hold a tailored silhouette season after season. Key properties Leaves are cut by hand without felling the palm — the plant regrows and is harvested again the following season. They are sun-dried for two to three weeks, hand-split into even strands, then braided or twisted by artisan cooperatives into the cords our weavers work with. Doum is our foundation fiber for structured totes, market baskets and storage pieces. It takes leather trim, embroidery and sewn linings cleanly, keeps its geometry under daily load, and delivers the bulk-to-bulk consistency wholesale programs depend on. A renewable, rain-fed harvest: no irrigation, no pesticides, no plastic. Offcuts are composted or used as kindling, and the harvest itself sustains rural cooperative income across harvesting regions.
